About

Vada Lee is a Seoul-based visual artist who works primarily in painting. Dwelling at length on the feelings that come from everyday experience and reverie, Lee captures the images that surface in a flash. Without settling on a fixed destination, the artist follows the way a mood takes concrete shape within the picture plane, and chooses the medium to suit that mood. Lee works mainly in acrylic and water-soluble oil paint, at times combining the two on a single surface, and alongside these also works in conté, charcoal, and ink drawing.

Nude figures and beasts that move between reality and fantasy appear in Lee’s pictures. The body is evidence of being: through the warmth and touch of skin, it lets us sense the reality of ourselves and of others. The beast stays beside the figure—a guardian who at times shows the way forward, and a concentrate of pure life force. They lean on one another, clash, twist, and intermingle, gazing at each other or beyond the picture plane. Within the gazes they form lies the artist’s own stance: stepping back from overwhelming emotion in order to observe it. Lee finds solace in watching beings of differing character coexist freely within the pictures they create.

Lee grew up in Korea’s overheated college-entrance-exam environment. Forced to sit at a desk from morning until the small hours throughout adolescence, Lee eased the stifling confinement and loneliness by imagining companions and losing themselves in those companions’ narratives. That memory grew into a longing for warmth and life, and became the foundation of the work.

On surfaces where weighty, highly saturated colors collide over skin tones that seem to run with hot blood, the vitality that fascinates the artist is not simple strength or optimism. It lies closer to the desperation of dreaming of eternity while knowing that nothing lasts forever; to an obsession that turns the eyes bloodshot; to the tenacity of a being that, with both legs broken, pushes on with its arms, and, with its arms lost, with its teeth, biting into the earth to keep moving. Lee does not let pain and love, or despair and hope, settle to one side, but looks at the state in which such opposing feelings endure together. Within it lie tenderness toward beings possessed by the resolve to live life to the very end, and awe at the radiance they bring forth.
